Medieval Streets

The streets of Sarlat are pedestrian only, other than the main thoroughfare which remains open to vehicles outside the prime tourist season. Most streets are cobble stones and the street lamps are lit by gas, as they have been for centuries.

Sarlat La Caneda is the most central town in the Dordogne region to all the major tourist sites. The town itself was the first location in France to be preserved for heritage. It was established in the 12th century and many of the golden stone buildings  of the town are many hundreds of years old. Sarlat Town House is one of those buildings.
