Medieval Streets
The streets of Sarlat are pedestrian only, other than the main thoroughfare which remains open to vehicles outside the prime tourist season. Most streets are cobble stones and the street lamps are lit by gas, as they have been for centuries.

Being the main tourist town of the Dordogne region, Sarlat is a gastronomic adventure, with over 100 restaurants throughout the medieval town and the surrounding precinct.

Markets
Each week there are two outdoor markets held in Sarlat - on Wednesday and Saturday. The old church also has a market every day of the week. The town also holds festival events during the year.

Historic Buildings
There are hundreds of historic buildings in Sarlat, many of which house shops and restaurants. The cathedral is open to visitors as are several historic buildings. The tourist office runs walking tours of the medieval town.
Shops
All around the medieval town there are shops selling a wide variety of goods, including patisseries and many gift shops. Supermarkets are located outside the medieval town but in close proximity.
Sarlat La Caneda is the most central town in the Dordogne region to all the major tourist sites. The town itself was the first location in France to be preserved for heritage. It was established in the 12th century and many of the golden stone buildings of the town are many hundreds of years old. Sarlat Town House is one of those buildings.
